Dr. Marco Romeo Pitone – Head of Collections – Doreen Valiente Foundation

Marco obtained his BA in Cultural Heritage Studies and MA in Archaeology at Università degli Studi di Milano (Milan – IT), where he studied the Archaeology of Religion, focusing on prehistoric and protohistoric Central Italy and the wider Mediterranean. He then moved to England for his PhD at the School of History, Classics and Archaeology of Newcastle University (Newcastle Upon Tyne – UK), where he carried out research on the application of Experimental Archaeology on Early Cypriot Metallurgy.

Marco spends his summer-times enjoying his excavations at the Late Bronze Age site of Sorgenti della Nova (Farnese, VT – ITALY), where he works as Supervisor since 2007.

He started his spiritual path within Wicca very young, starting his studies in 2000 and obtaining in 2005 a 1st Degree Initiation in a Gardnerian/Alexandrian coven in Italy. He recently joined a reformed Gardnerian coven in the North East of England.

He currently works in a managerial role at the archaeological open-air museum Jarrow Hall Anglo-Saxon Farm, Village and Bede Museum (Jarrow – UK).

Role within the Doreen Valiente Foundation/Centre for Pagan Studies framework

On July 12 2022 Marco took on the voluntary role of Head of Collections for the Doreen Valiente Foundation

With his archaelogical qualifications and museum management experience, together with his insight into the seminal work of Doreen Valiente, we have found in Marco the perfect candidate for this role in the Doreen Valiente Foundation.

He has already contributed to online talks and lectures for the Doreen Valiente Foundation, collaborating with the Folklore Library in April 2022, an active member of our Book Club and supporting the existing online series of talks for the Foundation, he is already delivering a series of online talks and workshops for the DVF/CFPS using his findings as he explores and curates the DVF collection. This exciting project brings the fascinating artefacts of the Doreen Valiente legacy into the public eye.

Currently he is working on his next talk Working Title “The Cutting (or-not) Edge of Witchcraft. Swords, athames and other ritual blades
