2009 Conference Reviews

The Charge of the Goddess Conference – A Day For Doreen Valiente on 13th September was an outstanding success and we thank all who attended the event.

Katy Jennison: – Americans have what they call Big Name Pagans. Here in Britain we
don’t have such things, partly because the initialism “BNP” stands for
something altogether more sinister, and partly because we on this side
of the herring-pond don’t believe in encouraging people to give
themselves airs. We do have a few esteemed elders, people who’ve been
around rather a long time, but if they’re rash enough to start making
pronouncements you can be sure we’ll make a point of disagreeing with
them.
Quite a few of the BNPs we don’t have were at the Day for Doreen
Valiente in Conway Hall on Sunday 13 September. The items all belonged to Doreen Valiente, the Mother of Wicca and Gerald Gardner’s High Priestess. She was also the author of The Charge of the Goddess – the most famous set of lines from the Wiccan Book of Shadows as well as writing the influential books Natural Magic

and An ABC of Witchcraft Past and Present

Marian Green bringing to life with her eloquence days spent with
Doreen on the Sussex Hills. Maxine Sanders sitting quite still, a
stillness which grew as she spoke until the stillness in that
spellbound hall was so tangible you could touch it. Mary Rands, on her
70th birthday, with a tiny hint of mischief and a sparkle in her eye.
Janet, playful and supple as a ballerina, speaking of great wonders

oxford, 15 september 2009Wendy Cook Essex: – Emerging from Holborn tube station, the cheerful news seller greeted our enquiring faces with perfect directions to Conway Hall, without us uttering a word! We hurried to the venue, partly to stave off the chilly weather nipping at our ankles but mainly to arrive in time for the opening greeting.
